Whale coast Mall

Hermanus, South Africa

Whale Coast Mall is situated on Main Road in Sandbaai, which lies at the entrance to the picturesque Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in Hermanus. Hermanus is a seaside town southeast of Cape Town in the Western Cape Province.

Conveniently situated, this 30, 000m² regional centre boasts a diverse tenant mix, anchored by Checkers, Woolworths and Food Lovers Market. The centre is designed in a linear arrangement, and takes into account the fall of the site, by allowing a split level design. The main mall is anchored by two anchors on either end, with a third anchor on the lower level. The mall itself adheres rigidly to retail principles in terms of flow and layout with a contemporary and modern architectural response- the main façade been designed to announce itself to the passing traffic. Large features that could be interpreted as inspired by whale tails denote the entrances, without being too literal, and the whale sculpture hangs in the main clerestory-lit centre court.

The architecture is light, airy and contemporary, with no architectural features competing for attention with the retail displays. Select works were undertaken by local community and the contractor employed labour from the area.
