Weskus Mall

VREDENBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

The expansive Weskus Mall caters to a wide catchment area in the Saldhana Peninsula with boundaries in the Swartland and Olifants areas on the Cape West Coast. The two-level mall offers an extensive range of retailing options.

At the heart of the building is a double-volume atrium that gives far-reaching views of the mall’s scenic surroundings. The architecture is informed by the surroundings and responds to the contours of the land. The unique shape of the building is designed to withstand the strong winds that are prevalent in the area and fragmented roof structures integrate with the surrounding landscape. Similarly, the use of local materials responds to its location and takes cognisance of the beauty of the region. The planning of the mall focused on the concept of ‘equal opportunity’ design and planning.
