The new Pick n Pay Flagship store was designed as a multi-level centre comprising the Supermarket, Liquor Store, Cooking School and Thyme On Nicol Restaurant, approx. 450sqm of additional retail all supported by basement and on grade parking. Fundamental aspects of the design were the inclusion of sustainable initiatives and the desire to interconnect the interior and exterior spaces which was achieved by introducing large glazed facades. The move toward more natural design and ambience required the need for energy efficiency and sustainability. Sustainable initiatives are found in the form of two attenuation dams, daylight harvesting, rainwater harvesting, the use of natural refrigerants, BMS, a combined refrigeration and mechanical plant, an ice storage system and sustainable materials and products to name a few. This development was most successful and achieved a series of awards upon completion.
