Maponya Mall

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Maponya Mall is Soweto’s first regional shopping centre and the realisation of a 28-year dream of its developer Richard Maponya.

A deliberate decision was made to make no clear reference to an identifiable architectural style but rather to focus on sophisticated design principles. The culture and identity of the Maponya family is maintained through architectural details in the building: the elephant, which is the Maponya family emblem, is evident in the dynamic sweeping forms of the food court that suggest the curves of elephant tusks.

The racetrack walkway internally circles the mall creating a communal space and allowing convenient access to shops. Natural light entering through skylights and clerestory windows combine with expansive volumes to create an open interior space.
