Shopping malls are a relatively new phenomenon in India. Lack of local expertise and infrastructure had resulted in poorly produced retail developments incapable of catering to the needs of a rapidly developing urban population. BAI’s expertise in retail design and construction was therefore highly valued in the Indian market. UB City is an 88 000m² mixed-use development in the commercial IT centre of Bangalore.

BAI created the 15 000 m² retail component of UB City that comprises detailed themed areas. A central court ties different areas and architectural styles together. The open-air square is a social space where people from the various buildings can congregate. The cosmopolitan design expresses a culturally sensitive aesthetic reflective of the affluent individuals visiting the centre. In the 2009 Cityscape Awards, UB City was awarded first prize in two categories: Best Architecture and Best Commercial Architecture in Mumbai.
